This full-day workshop will introduce basic tools and techniques unique to cold wax medium (CWM). No experience (with art and/or cold wax) is required, but is also welcome.

You will learn the basics of CWM materials, drying time, tools, substrates, safe use and clean-up. We will explore techniques of layering textures and patterns to create non-objective compositions. We will dive in playfully without expectations.

In the morning, I will discuss setting up your work space, we will tape grids and prepare our surfaces, learn about tools and mixing cold wax medium with oil paint, and apply a layer of transparent paint. I will demo: mark-making and painting "wet-in-wet" on paper; creating an abstract composition (ie landscape); creating texture and shapes.

After a lunch break (also giving the wax some time to dry between layers), participants will explore the demonstrated techniques.

*Feel free to email me with any questions about the class or materials.

Maximum of 6 students. One full-day session

*To reserve your place in any class, payment must be received at the time of registration.

*For a refund on any of our classes, we will need to be notified at least 48 hours in advance of the first class.

    CHOOSING COLORS: GENDRAL INFO
    • (REQUIRED) TITANIUM WHITE: to mix lighter tints• (RECOMMENDED) BLACK: to mix darker shades
    • _AVOID_ALIZARIN_CRIMSON_ with CWM (the pigment migrates toward the surface and turns everything pink!)
    • Don't stress!! There are no bad colors!! (except Alizarin crimson - unless you love pink ;)• Choose a color range you ENJOY - do you prefer earthy? intense? tonal? colorful?• You will explore the wide range of possible colors possible with the limited tubes you choose.• A color "HUE" is a modern safer version of a classic color made from potentially toxic heavy metals (like cadmium, cobalt, etc). Hues are also generally transparent instead of opaque like the colors they replace.

    USEFUL COLOR COMBINATIONS INCLUDE:
    • Violet plus yellow: a range of pure and muted violets and yellows.
    • Ultramarine blue, Quinacronone red, Cadmium yellow light: act as basic primaries for a WIDE RANGE OF COLORS
    • Ultramarine, Burnt sienna: will mix a dark black; with white -> WIDE RANGE OF MUTED/NEUTRALS (& blue). Adding a yellow will give GREEN mixture options
    • Naphthol red (or Cadmium red), Yellow ochre, IVORY black: [act as primary red, yellow and blue] known as the ZORN palette, will give a surprisingly LARGE RANGE of mixed colors (also excellent for portrait painting with a wide range of FLESH TONES)
    • Burnt sienna, Yellow ochre, Payne's grey: act as primary red, yellow and blue if you prefer MORE EARTHY colors
    • Turquoise, Quinacronone red or magenta, Hansa yellow light: Close to the CYM Cyan/Yellow/Magenta color wheel
    • India yellow, Cadmium yellow light, Cadmium orange, Quinacrinone red, Ultramarine blue, Turquoise (a FULL SPLIT-PRIMARY PALETTE: can give you a wide range of BOTH INTENSE AND MUTED colors; can mix a very dark black from the 3 transparent colors, so no need for a tube of black)
