As the holiday season approaches, what better gift to give a loved one than a handmade book? This class will focus on learning 4 different types of bookbinding styles. You will be involved in every step of the process, from folding the paper to stitching the book together. Bookbinding is a great space to combine craft and creativity, allowing you to create one-of-a-kind objects that showcase your individual style while remaining functional. And if you don’t want to give them away, just consider them gifts to yourself! Maximum of 8 students. Four 2.5-hour sessions.

*To reserve your place in any class, payment must be received at the time of registration.

*For a refund on any of our classes, we will need to be notified at least 48 hours in advance of the first class.

Please see materials list below! (All students get 20% off purchases made while enrolled in a class)

Our classes are now located at our "Studio North" location. When arriving make sure you have all your materials listed below for you class!

    MATERIAL LIST

    · Paper – any type you like, at least 9x12 in size. I recommend multiples of 6 & 9 (9x12 or 18x24) but if you have old pads laying around, bring them! We will use the same paper for all 4 books.

    · Particle board for covers —I usually use the back of the paper pad, but if you want something archival safe, get Davey Board or Bookbinders’ Board. We will use this for 2 of the books’ covers.

    · Thick paper or posterboard for covers –This will be for the remaining 2 books. You can use thin cardboard here if you prefer, just make sure it’s easily foldable. If you want to use paper, I recommend printmaking paper or thick mixed media.

    · Decorative Paper or Bookcloth for covers—If you want to go the upcycled route, old posters, thick wrapping paper, un-matted artwork, and calendar pages work great. I usually take the opportunity to browse the decorative paper section of Oregon Art Supply and find plenty of beautiful options! Get two—one for the outside, and one for the inside. Must be at least 8x11inches.

    · Bone Folder

    · Utility knife—I like Olfa snap off blades. Make sure it’s box cutter weight, whatever you choose.

    · Self-healing cutting mat—At least 8x10 in size is good, but I prefer the 18x24”

    · Foam brush or other glue brush –you can also repurpose credit cards from the mail for this step!

    · PVA Glue—other glue types will not work

    · Waxed linen thread—there are a couple exposed spine bindings included, so pick a color that “matches” your cover papers!

    · Awl

    · Bookbinding needles—1 curved, 1 straight. Bookbinding needles are often blunt at the end, and thicker than sewing needles.
