For all levels, this workshop presents key practices and techniques to help you build skills in drawing.

Drawing from observation involves a number of different activities that seemingly must happen simultaneously: Selecting the view, assessing spatial relationships, controlling your media… Exercises in this workshop will focus on helpful practices to clarify stages of drawing, and will include plenty of individualized support.

Drawing is a natural process that engages our imagination, connects us to the world around us, and enriches our creative lives. Drawing can be practical, to figure out something or to design something. It can be a powerful way to communicate feelings, visualize a story or idea. Whatever your purpose for drawing, there are skills to build, and that can be so absorbing and rewarding that you find the real reason to draw… Because you enjoy doing it!

    8 Students maximum.One 3-hour session.

*To reserve your place in any class, payment must be received at the time of registration.

*For a refund on any of our classes, we will need to be notified at least 48 hours in advance of the first class.

    REQUIRED MATERIALS LIST

Our classes are now located at our "Studio North" location. When arriving make sure you have all your materials listed below for you class!

Note: All students get 20% off purchases at Oregon Art Supply while enrolled in a class… What a great time to try new stuff! The list below is enough to participate in the workshop, but you can bring any media you already have and see how it can be used.

PLEASE make sure you have appropriate supplies for the workshop. Because classes are no longer located at the store, you need to have your supplies when you come to class. Contact the instructor with any questions. Basically, pencil, paper, eraser… but it does make a difference when you have the best tools!

    Paper:

Any drawing weight paper will work, but avoid highly textured paper. Oregon Art Supply has a good selection of drawing tablets (Robert Bateman, Bee Paper, Strathmore, Canson, etc.). This is a table top class, so a tablet size of 8 1/2 x 11 or 11 x 14 works well, no smaller! You can also bring any paper you already have. If you are using loose sheets, bring a drawing board for support.

    Media:

Drawing pencil, soft: Choose from: General’s Draughting #0314, General’s Layout, Ebony pencils… they are all wonderful soft graphite pencils. There are also the “graded” pencils… The higher the number with a “B”, the softer the lead, so 3B or softer is good.

And / Or: If you don’t want to mess with a sharpener, try a 0.7 or 0.9 mechanical pencil. Replace the original lead with softer lead (2B, available at the counter). I use a mechanical pencil for most drawing. Recommended: Pentel Twist-Erase. It is sturdy, and has a good large eraser.

OPTIONAL: Firm chalk pastel (Cretacolor or Nupastel) or Conte stick. Hue should be medium to medium dark in value, a neutral hue (brown, grey to black, ochre, etc.). One stick/color is all you need. Compressed charcoal is also good. This will be used for tone work, so needs to be erasable.

    Erasers: 2 types:

White vinyl, either a block or clic type (Pentel clic).

Kneaded eraser: Faber Castell #127220 is the BEST kneaded eraser.
